Welcome to New Yorkers’ wild wild world of Wi-Fi
February 1st, 2010 - 5:51 pm ICT by ANINew York, Feb 1 (ANI): New Yorkers have found a unique way to express themselves without having to compromise their identity.
Wireless Internet users have come up with Wi-Fi network names to mark out their cyber territories.
And the mad monikers they have come up with reflect the unique attitudes of people in the city.
“People want to express themselves, they want to be outrageous, clever, witty or disgusting without having to compromise their identity,” the New York Daily News quoted Alexandra Janelli, 28, the city’s premiere - and perhaps only - collector of quirky Wi-Fi names, as saying.
“It’s a new sublayer of New York. They get dirty and nasty and mildly inappropriate, but that’s what makes them fun,” Janelli added.
Internet users who go wireless usually have a modem in their home or office to give them access to the Web.
However, when they leave their immediate area, their laptops try to connect to the next nearest Wi-Fi network.
The names of the networks pop up on the user’s computer.
Some Wi-Fi users on the East Side display their political stripes by dubbing their networks “killhealthcare,” “betterthanbush” and “Palinsux.”
“Imcompletelynaked” boasts one user in the vicinity of 33rd and Broadway.
Other names include “Imunder-yourbed,” “normanbates” and “bedroomspy”. (ANI)
