US expert for melding of ‘jugad’, systematic imagination
December 8th, 2011 - 9:57 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS) A leading Indian American design expert has called for melding “jugad and systematic imagination to create better economic opportunities”.
Vijay Kumar, professor at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, made this remark at the opening of the 11th CII-NID Design Summit here Thursday.
“Open innovation and crowd sourcing is going to be the next big thing in design too. Every one will be able to suggest and come up with a design,” Kumar said.
‘Jugad’ is what is described as “ingenious frugal engineering”
He said design has been integral to the “ebb and flow of Indian civilisation over several millennia… The rising tide of the need for design has in fact given pioneers hope and direction”.
National Institute of Design Director Pradyumna Vyas called for “building innovations around people’s needs”.
CII Defence Council chairman Ajay Chowdhry called for tax incentives to stimulate innovation and growth. “Design is a tool for innovation and business growth. So why not extend tax incentives to design activities as well so as to stimulate innovation and spur growth.”
Earlier, reading out the inaugural address on behalf of Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Secretary P.K. Chaudhery said he hoped, “India would become the design outsourcing hub of the world in the next five years”.
The summit concludes Dec 9.
