Tweet, media punking, staycation compete for Oz dictionary Word of 2009
January 24th, 2010 - 1:52 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, January 24 (ANI): Words of informal usage such as tweet, media punking, staycation, noob and blag have been put up by Macquarie Dictionary to compete for the title of the word of 2009.
Judges, including poet Les Murray, University of Sydney vice-chancellor Dr Michael Spence and Macquarie Dictionary editor Susan Butler, will decide if tweet, the act of posting a message on popular social networking website Twitter, was the most popular term that defined the past year or not.
The terms noob, a new person online or in a chat room, staycation, a stay-at-home holiday where you pretend to be a tourist in your own city, and friend with benefits, a friend who also is a casual sex partner, were also said to be among the favourites, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Others such as media punking, the trick of media into believing a false story, blagging, talking your way into getting something for free, and slacktivists, who sign online petitions or wear badges for a cause but do little else, may as well bag the honour to be named on February 3. (ANI)
