cheese Madison, Mar 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Swiss Gruyere has won the top honors in the World Championship Cheese Contest 2010, which was held in Madison and more than 2000 varieties of cheese battled it out, to win the top honors in this contest. And the most surprising bit is that Wisconsin cheese makers were behind 21 of the 78 finest cheeses in the world, which battled it out for the top honors.

The best cheese of the championship was decided on Thursday, and the ultimate winner was the Swiss cheese Gruyere. The judges said that its creamy texture as well as its brilliant flavor of some herbs, made it truly the winner of the best cheese title in the world. The second position was won by another Swiss cheese, which is known as Andeerer Traum. Its characteristic is that it has a smear ripened hard texture. It is so named as it is made by Andeer Sennerei, who belongs to the cheese-loving nation of Switzerland. The 3rd position was bagged by Gmundner Berg Premium, which is made to perfection by Alois Pesendorfer of Gmunden in Austria. It is an open class semi soft cheese.

The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association were the main sponsors of the contest. This time there were a record number of entries of over 2000 contenders for the crown of the best cheese in the world. However on Tuesday, the best amongst them were chosen and the battlefield was narrowed down to just 78. And on Thursday the main winners in all the classes were chosen and honored.
