Jan 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) How long can a person wear jeans without washing it even once? On an average it would not be more than a few months at max but a student of University of Alberta has set a new record by wearing jeans for 15 months without even washing it for a single time. The very thought of doing so may make some people feel like vomiting but Josh Le has done so. He wanted it with a purpose says the student. He wanted to see how much bacteria can reside in the jeans if he keeps wearing it for such a long period. He wore it for 330 times from September 2009 to December 2010. The idea clicked his mind when he was taking a class on textile. “My professor mentioned that she researches on textiles and bacteria, so it piqued my curiosity there. I half jokingly said we should do a bacterial analysis on them and that’s where it sort of started”.
Even though he tried to keep the jeans clean sometimes food spilled over them. Needless to say after some months of wearing the jeans became way too stinky. He then put them in freezer. Surprisingly the smell vanished after that. When 15 months were over he approached Professor Rachel McQueen to examine the jeans for bacteria accumulation. It was tested and then he washed them and wore again for a few days. After that another test was conducted and the results were really amazing. It may be hard to believe but the bacteria level found in the two tests were almost similar!
The study report says most of the bacteria in the jeans came from the skin of the student and they were not harmful as such. It has to be admitted that his friends were kind enough to put up with his experiment for so long.
