Shoaib Akhtar likely to be picked up for Champs TrophyAugust 11th, 2008 - 3:27 pm ICT by ANI
Karachi , Aug 11 (ANI): Pakistan fast bowler, who has been out of his national team for almost ten months, appears certain to make a comeback in the national team for next months ICC Champions Trophy.
The pacer, who turns 33 on Wednesday, a day after Pakistan name their 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, bowled his heart out in the practice games last week to convince national selectors that he was fully fit.
The countrys chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said that a team of selectors will meet Shoiab on Monday before deciding whether he would be picked up or not. We will be meeting Shoaib in Lahore tomorrow to get input before deciding the Champions Trophy squad, The News quoted chief selector Ahmed as saying.
In the first practice match on Friday, Shoaib bowled nine overs and took two wickets. He followed it up by bowling six overs at an express pace in the next match on Saturday night that was reduced to just 30 overs.
His Multan show was enough to convince the national selectors that Shoaib is fully fit to play for Pakistan in the Champions Trophy. He could in fact warm up for the event by playing in the three-match ODI series at home against New Zealand if the Kiwis decide to come here. The series is in doubt because of security concerns.
