Selja concerned about safety of Tagores’ Jorasanko house
November 6th, 2011 - 11:23 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 6 (IANS) Expressing concern over the structural safety of the Tagores’ ancestral house in northern Kolkata’s Jorasanko where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was born and died, Union Culture Minister Selja Sunday said the building needed more renovation.
“Lot more work needs to be done,” she said after visiting the heritage structure which houses a campus of Rabindra Bharati university as well as a museum.
While expressing satisfaction over the quality of work on painting restoration, she said more work needs to be done on the flooring.
“There are concerns about the structural safety of the building,” the minister said.
The Archaeological Survey of India has taken up the restoration and renovation of the house as part of the bard’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations.
Earlier, Selja visited the Indian Museum and called for efforts to bring it at par with the best of museums in the world as it has an unparalleled collection.
Tagore, the first Asian to win the Nobel prize for literature in 1913, holds the unique distinction of having composed the national anthems of two nations - India and Bangladesh.
