‘Scrudle’: the newest utensil that scrapes every last morsel from saucepans
November 20th, 2009 - 5:17 pm ICT by ANILondon, Nov 20 (ANI): Move over spatulas, scoops, ladles and scrapers, for a new utensil known as scrudle is set to revolutionise British kitchens.
Invented by a 65-year-old housewife Margaret O’Callaghan, scrudle is a cross between a ladle, spatula and jug.
Its ingenious design has won a 10,000 pounds prize and has been acquired by the kitchenware retailer.
If it hits the shelves next year O’Callaghan will receive 3 pounds for every 100 pounds of the utensils sold.
“I get royalties for the rest of my life. It’s really amazing. I am so excited,” the Telegraph quoted O’Callaghan as saying.
The gadget is designed for cooks who get frustrated they cannot scoop out soups, stews or casseroles from saucepans with round-bottom ladles. There is always a significant amount left at the bottom of the pan.
She said: “Like most people, I find it very difficult to serve up boeuf bourguignon from a heavy casserole pan. The first few scoops are fine, but you get into trouble the further you go down.”
The scrudle can hold about two-thirds of a pint of liquid, or a decent portion of stew.
It was voted the best of over 600 entries submitted in a competition sponsored by Finish, the dishwasher powder company, which has funded the 10,000 pounds prize.
It was judged by a panel headed by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, including Paul Pankhurst, the chair of British Design Innovation. (ANI)
