Museum of performing arts to come up in Delhi
March 8th, 2011 - 7:54 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 8 (IANS) The Delhi Development Authority has been asked to allot five acres of land in Dwarka area of west Delhi for a building to house a National Museum of Performing Arts (NMPA), union Minister of Culture Kumari Selja said Tuesday.
The minister said the “setting up of a National Museum of Performing Arts (NMPA) in Delhi was an approved plan activity of the Sangeet Natak Akademi”. The museum will host a national repository of Indian music.
Initially, the NMPA will operate out of the akademi’s premises at Chanakyapuri.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Selja said the “national curriculum framework (NCF), 2005 for school education recommends art education, including music, dance, visual Arts and theatre, as a compulsory subject up to Class 10″.
She said the NCF recommended “classical music and fine arts” as separate subjects at the higher secondary level.
She said music and fine arts were a part of the syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) at the secondary and the senior secondary level.
In Classes 9 and 10, music and painting are offered as additional subjects.
In Classes 11 and 12, music and fine arts are offered as elective subjects.
The CBSE offers Hindustani vocal, melodic instrument and instrumental percussion and Carnatic vocal, melodic instrument and instrumental percussion courses at the senior secondary level.
The CBSE also offers painting, graphics, sculpture and applied art subjects, the minister said.
