Washington DC, Feb 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Adm. Mike Mullen wants the gays to serve openly in the military. This is a huge boost in the arm for Pentagon supporters who want to lift the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law. Mullen was very vocal in his thoughts, when he said that the gay troops who keep their sexual orientation a secret, could be done away with, without any adverse effect on the military morale, recruitment or readiness. He voiced his thoughts to the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Mullen said that, “It is my personal and professional belief that allowing homosexuals to serve openly would be the right thing to do,” Adm. Mullen told the Senate panel. “No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.”
This is certainly a major boost in the arm for the military, as he became the highest-ranking military officer to ever endorse repealing the restrictions. These restrictions have been a source of controversy, since they were enforced by the Bill Clinton administration in 1993. Adm Mike Mullen’s predecessor, - Marine Gen. Peter Pace, had described homosexuality as “immoral” in 2007.
