Mohammad Asif losing his luster among fansJune 21st, 2008 - 2:47 pm ICT by ANI
Islamabad , June 21 (ANI): The Dubai authorities may have dropped the drug charge against Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif describing it as insignificant, but he seems to be losing luster among his fans in Pakistan , who have severely criticized him in different blogs.
The bloggers wished the bowler should not be allowed to represent his national side again as he has been found twice involved in drugs-related cases.
Asif has already disgraced Pakistan once before. We should have zero tolerance for such repeat offenders, wrote an irritated blogger named Teeth Maestro.
Another blogger wrote: Do us a favor. Lock him away remembering to throw away the key at least long enough that he never represents Pakistan again, reported the Washington Post.
Customs agents in Dubai said that Asif had an illicit substance in his wallet when he arrived at the airport. Pakistani English daily The News splashed the news atop its sports page, saying authorities thought the substance was hashish or opium.
This was the second occasion when Asif was found involved in a drug-related controversy. The last time he was suspected of drug use was in 2006, when he and teammate Shoaib Akhtar tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone. The Pakistan Cricket Board initially barred Asif from playing for one year and Akhtar for two. The suspensions were overturned on appeal, however.
While Asif denied using drugs in his latest brush with authorities, tongues were still wagging in Islamabad , Pakistan ’s capital. This week, Dawn, Pakistan ’s other large-circulation English-language newspaper, decried the sorry state of the country’s favorite pastime. (ANI)
