Millions to work beyond retirement age in Britain
November 25th, 2011 - 11:43 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Nov 25 (IANS) Millions of Britons will have to work past their retirement age as they find it hard to pay-off their bills.
As many as 6.1 million, or 28 percent of today’s 50-plus employees plan to continue working for an extra six years, with two-thirds of those saying they cannot afford to retire, the Daily Express reported.
According to retirement specialist LV=, as many as 4.3 million workers who had packed up have since gone back to the workplace.
Its working late index reveals that, on an average, those planning to work past the state retirement age will carry on for an extra six years.
At the current retirement age, this means men working until they are 71 and women until they are at least 66.
One in five, or 20 percent, say they expect to work for a decade past the age they can collect their pension.
