Mercer’s 2011 ‘Quality of Living index’ names Vienna as the best place to live in the world

Vienna, Nov 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Mercer’s 2011 Quality of Living Index has named the Austrian capital Vienna as the best place to live in the world. The city which has a population of about 1.7 million was adjudged as having the best living standards compared to over 220 other cities in the world.

This is the third time that the city has been named as the best to live in. European cities dominated the top ten list. Following Vienna on the index is the Swiss city of Zurich. New Zealand’s Auckland was named the third best city to live in.

Munich is the first German city in the list and it is fourth on the index. Munich is followed by another German city Dusseldorf which came in at the fifth position. Conspicuously missing in the top 30 best cities to live in is London and New York. The British capital is ranked 38th, nine places better than New York at the 47th position.

The index also has the list of the safest places to live in the world. Luxembourg was named the safest place to live followed by Bern, Switzerland. Finland’s Helsinki, Zurich and Vienna completes the top five safest cities in the world.
