Manish Malhotra disappoints at Delhi couture week
July 21st, 2010 - 1:08 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 21 (IANS) Blame it on hectic schedules or too many fashion weeks, but Bollywood’s favourite designer Manish Malhotra’s show at the Pearls Infrastructure Projects Ltd (PIPL) Delhi Couture Week inaugural was disappointing - his ensemble was like serving old wine in a new bottle.
Models walked on the ramp Tuesday in long jackets teamed up with lehngas, later jackets were replaced by blouses and feather masks. Malhotra’s designs had a Spanish influence and did reflect his traditional flamboyance, but there was nothing extraordinary.
Malhotra had at the Mumbai Couture week last year showcased the “Destination Weddings” theme that saw a fusion of western dresses with Indian sensibilities - something one would love to go for.
However, the vibrant colour palette, which this Mumbai-based designer is known for, was missing at PIPL.
Instead, long anarkali suits, elaborate lehngas and a few saris with intricate chickenkari and dabka work in hues of beiges, off whites, black and teal dominated his colour palette. In some cases, red and burgundy did show up.
For men, dhotis and smart coats in the hues of black were part of his short collection.
As for the backdrop of the set, a disappointment again. It was a simple red backdrop with a few brass mirrors, a red couch on one side and some brass lamps flowing down from the sealing - nothing really grand.
