Beijing, Sep 4 (IANS) The Chinese need to learn tolerance and courtesy, a newspaper said Tuesday, after two women on the Shanghai Metro fought ferociously over a seat.

An article in the Shanghai Daily said the scuffle between the two women last week was making the rounds of social media.

A young woman who failed to get a seat proceeded to sit on an older woman’s legs in an effort to crowd her out.

This led to a long fight. They kept fighting even after fellow passengers offered their seats to the two women.

“Why don’t we make compromises to solve conflicts?” the daily asked in an article.

It said the increasingly fierce competition in society had pushed people to become aggressive and highly irritable.

“Therefore, people tend to deal with problems by using violence, rather than compromise, which leaves a deep scar on society.”

The daily asked people to “adjust ourselves to the changing world by behaving with tolerance and courtesy in order to create a joyful life and harmonious society”.
