Lapierre urges Indian corporates to fund his projects
December 8th, 2011 - 12:53 am ICT by IANSBhangar (West Bengal), Dec 7 (IANS) French author Dominique Lapierre is planning to meet Indian corporates in three metropolitan cities in quest of donations for his philanthropic projects, to offset the problem caused by the European financial crisis.
The 80-year-old Lapierre runs number of socio-economic projects in the Sundarbans and adjacent districts of rural West Bengal.
“The fund flow from Europe for the schemes have decreased due to the financial crisis. I feel the Indian entrepreneurs should come up with generous donations in such a scenario as this country is now an emerging economy,” said Lapierre in this rural belt of South 24 Parganas.
The author of popular books like “Freedom at Midnight” and “The City of Joy” said he would travel to Kolkata, as also Mumbai and Delhi to meet Indian businessmen with pleas to fund his projects.
Thirty years back in 1981, Lapierre had formed the “City of Joy Aid” for rehabilitation of slum children afflicted with leprosy using the royalties he receives from his books.
He now funds clinics, medical boat dispensaries and schools from his royalties.
