How the net became an integral part of our lives

Wellington, March 28 (ANI): Web is no longer just a source of information; it is also an extension of people themselves, thanks to social networking sites.
According to an international survey, the number of people using the net on a more personal level has significantly risen, especially in New Zealand.
A World internet Project report found that people using internet in the country had risen to 83 percent last year from 79 per cent in 2007.
It was noted that half of all internet users had an account in a social interaction site, most of whom preferred Facebook.
Also, 82 per cent checked their email daily.
“And it’s only going to increase. People may get Facebook fatigue, or change fads, but the trend is always towards more people using the internet,” NZ Herald News quoted IT commentator Peter Griffin, as saying.
Auckland University of Technology professor Allan Bell, who directed the study, insists the role of the web has changed.
He said: “The price of being a have-not goes up if most of the people are haves.
“Very frequently today you are referred to a website for further information. If somebody doesn’t have that access or ability, then they are disadvantaged in terms of the information or the entertainment.”
The study noted that the numbers had increased thanks to technology allowing access to net on mobile phones. (ANI)
