Dec. 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A recent survey has revealed that while hangover after a drinking binge cannot be altogether avoided, the intensity can be lessened by choosing the right kind of alcohol. A survey was conducted by the researchers in the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies and the researchers in the University of Michigan Medical School. A team of perfectly healthy, but compulsive drinkers were appointed by the researchers to assist them in their study. The study was conducted for two weeks, over two evenings. Both times, the recruits were given different types of alcohol.
The reactions of the drinkers after the drinking binge were studied throughout the night. For a whole day before the tests were conducted, the participants were not allowed the intake of any illicit drugs, any amount of caffeine or nicotine, that is, nothing that might have hampered the results of the tests. After the study was conducted, it was found that the people showed different reactions to the different types of alcohol supplied to them, irrespective of their body type.
The research has proved that the intensity of hangover increases if there has been intake of an excessive amount of drinks of a darker color. The type that lends the worst hangovers is bourbon. This is because the darker colored drinks are likely to have a higher content of chemical by-products than the lighter colored ones. However, none of the reports help in reaching a definite conclusion, as it has been found that those who feel better after consuming light colored beverages like vodka or white wine, do not feel any better during the hangover than those who have drunk red wine.
