German playwright to open Kovalam Literary Fest

New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS) The first Delhi edition of Kovalam Literary Festival Sep 29 will open with a presentation by celebrated German playwright and short story writer Savyon Liebrecht, the event organiser said Monday.

One of the highlights of the day-long festival, which will be held at the India International Centre (IIC), will be journalist-columnist and writer Jug Suraiya, who will read from his new non-fiction “JS and the Times of My Life”, a statement by festival director Binoo John said.

The short festival will include readings by Anuradha Roy from “The Folded Earth” and a session featuring Israeli playwright Motti Lerner.

It will also see Arvind Mehrotra read from his translations of Kabir’s poems, “Songs of Kabir”, followed by Mohammed Hanif, who will read from his new book “Our Lady of Alice Bhatti”. He will be in conversation with writer Manu Joseph.

Tigers of Dudwa National Park will be in focus of readings by Ashok Kumar.

The sports section will be represented by Suresh Menon’s biography of spinner Bishan Singh Bedi. The writer will be in conversation with the former India skipper and spinner.

The Thiruvananthapuram version of the festival Oct 1-2 will be inaugurated by union Minister Farooq Abdullah and will feature an additional line-up of writers like David Davidar, Fatima Bhutto, Rahul Pandita and Basharat Peer.
