New Delhi, July 21 (IANS) Denims and dresses, cool shades and casual flip flops, branded T shirts and bright bags — casual chic reigned Wednesday as Delhi University reopened for a new academic session Wednesday.
Inquisitive about campus life and conscious of fashion trends, freshers too dressed up in their best.

“It’s a nice feeling to be in college. Shedding the uniform spells freedom; school prayers, class bells get a good bye,” said Amrita, a first year English Honours student from Janki Devi Memorial College.

The fashion trend was set according to the needs of the monsoon season. Capris, shorts - with an anklet on one leg - pencil cut jeans and colourful slippers were a common sight.

“Chappals are the best option available in this muddy and dusty monsoon season. Besides being comfortable, they look trendy,” said Angela, a first year student from St. Stephens.

While some flaunted brands like Reebok, Adidas and Converse, others wore the always popular kolhapuris and ‘Oshos’ from Sarojini Nagar and Janpath.

If girls were dressed in the latest fashion trends, so were the boys, many of whom were sporting low rise jeans and colourful T-shirts from Benetton, Reebok and the like.

Clothes were not the only concern. Many paid equal attention to their hair with some sporting brand new cuts. Many girls had straightened their hair. Hair parted to a side and falling on the face seemed to be popular.

Janki Devi College student Amrita, who made it a point to go to a salon in Kamla Nagar nearby, said: “I got a new hairdo and took other services for my skin and face for my first day in college.”

The day was overcast but that didn’t stop students from wearing their shades, some expensive and other picked off the streets of Janpath and the like.

Freshers managed to sneak out of classes in gangs to explore their college campus even though the fear of ragging was ever present.

Pragya, Akshi and Pratima, a gang of freshers from Hindu college, said their first day was better than what they thought it would be.

“The first day has been good. We were afraid of ragging but nothing happened,” Pragya said.

For her, the first day of college was preceded by a special shopping spree from Sarojni Nagar Market and Janpath. “Hope it remains the same, though we know the pressure of studies will increase,” she added.
