dangerAug 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study has reported that dietary supplements may not be as beneficial as they claim. The report explains that many of the ingredients found in the dietary supplements may cause caner, liver problems, heart problems or even kidney damage. The study was published in the latest issue of Consumer Report and has been talked about widely. The report claims that among the 54,000 dietary supplements on record, only one-third have been found safe by the research.

The report claims that some of the all natural dietary supplements may also contain some synthetic chemicals that can cause damage to health. In the last two years, as many as 80 body building supplements and 50 sexual enhancement products have been recalled by the manufacturers after they were found to be dangerous. The report has listed a number of products and categorized them as ‘Supplements to Avoid’, ‘Supplements to Consider and the ‘Dirty Dozen’. The last contains the chemicals that have the potential to harm the body.

The 12 chemicals that have been called the most dangerous for the body are - Aconite, Bitter orange, Chaparral, Colloidal Silver, Coltsfoot, Comfrey, Country Mallow, Germanium, Greater celandine, Kava, Lobelia, Yohimbe. The report in the Consumer Report Magazine also indicated that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of USA has very little authority on dietary supplements. It claimed that the FDA often failed to use even the little authority that it has and also has not inspected a single factory of dietary supplements. The group that published the findings has urged the Congress to give more authority to the FDA so that it may regulate the use, sale and manufacture of dietary supplements as much as the prescription medicines.
