Contemporary masters on paper in Saffronart auction
July 5th, 2011 - 6:29 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 5 (IANS) A 24-hour online sale of art July 20-21 by Saffronart will offer an opportunity to acquire a range of 99 important works on paper by 22 leading contemporary Indian artists between 1950 and 1980.
“99 Modern Paperworks” will include works by leading Indian artists like Tyeb Mehta, V.S. Gaitonde, F.N. Souza, Nasreen Mohamedi, Arpita Singh and Jogen Chowdhury, the auction house said.
A collection on offer by Souza dates back to the 1950s. It includes his rare drawings in pencil, pastel, ink, chemical alterations on printed magazine paper, water colours and mixed media - illuminating the artist’s mastery over medium and the diversity of his body of work.
The catalogue also includes a 1962 painting by Gaitonde, underlining the artist’s almost ascetic practice, and an untitled 1993 charcoal drawing of a falling figure by Tyeb Mehta.
Among the lots by Akbar Padamsee are two rare mixed-media portraits from “Prophet” series of paintings in the 1950s.
Other highlights include an early charcoal rendering of “Benaras” by Ram Kumar, an interpretation of Krishen Khanna’s seminal painting “The Game II”, and two meticulous pencil drawings by Nasreen Mohamedi.
