Christmas celebrated with fervour in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Dec 25 (IANS) Visits to churches, exchange of gifts and greetings marked Christmas celebrations in Tamil Nadu Sunday.

Midnight masses were held at various churches here and across the state.

The Velankanni Church in Nagapattinam district attracted huge number of faithful.

Leaders including Governor K. Rosaiah, Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and DMK president M.Karunanidhi conveyed their wishes to Christians.

Bakeries made brisk business selling cakes and other goodies.

“We exchanged cakes and other goodies with our neighbours,” said C. Mathew, a public sector employee.

The Tamil Nadu government gave a Christmas gift to the Christians in the form of travel subsidy to those traveling to Jeruselum.

In an order issued here Sunday, the government has allocated Rs.1 crore towards this scheme this fiscal. Under this scheme Rs.20,000 will be provided as subsidy for 500 people this fiscal.
