Christmas celebrated in Punjab, Chandigarh
December 25th, 2011 - 6:53 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Dec 25 (IANS) Singing of carols and offering prayers at various churches marked the Christmas celebrations across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Sunday.
Churches at various places in both states and in Chandigarh were decorated and hundreds of people reached there for Christmas celebrations, braving the cold wave conditions over the region.
In Chandigarh, the main celebrations were at the Catholic Church in Sector 19 which had hundreds of visitors since Saturday night.
“A lot of people have been coming here since Saturday itself despite the cold conditions,” a preacher at the church said.
In Punjab, Christmas was celebrated in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Batala, Hoshiarpur, Bathinda, Ludhiana and other places.
In Haryana, the main celebrations were in Ambala, Karnal, Hisar, Rohtak and other places.
Markets in Chandigarh and other places in Punjab and Haryana were decorated to attract people.
“This is time for celebration and revelry. It is also good time for shopping. The markets are full this time of the year,” Sector 17 shop owner Vikas Arora said.
In Chandigarh, the weeklong Christmas and New Year celebrations started at the Sector 17 plaza, the city’s main shopping and commercial hub. Cultural activities and firworks will be organized during the next few days to mark the occasion. The celebrations will culminate Dec 31 evening.
