Christie’s to auction impressions of colonial India
September 14th, 2011 - 2:51 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The heritage of colonial India will be one of the major attractions at Christie’s upcoming Travel, Science and Natural History auction in London Sep 29.
Thirty-three works on paper, including aquatints, mezzotints, lithographs and water colours, as well as four paintings and two albums comprising nearly 70 photographs each of India and the country’s outstanding buildings and vistas will be on sale at the
auction.
The works will be offered as 37 lots (segments), a statement issued by the auction house said Wednesday.
One of the highlights of the collection is a print edition of “A Picturesque Voyage to India by the Way of China” by Thomas and William Daniell, two British travelling artists and engravers, who came to India in the 18th century to seek their fortunes as artists.
The Daniells’ great pictorial series on India, “Oriental Scenery,” was published in six parts over the period 1795-1808.
A blueprint of the Osmania General Hospital by British artist Vincent J. Esch in watercolour on paper dated 1910 and an impression of Bulund Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri built by Mughal emperor Akbar by artist F.D. Fowler, signed 1910, have also been described as significant by the auction house.
The collection will depict and documenting life in India during the 18th, 19th and the 20th centuries.
The built-scapes were documented by a variety of artists and photographers during their travels in India and along the Indian Ocean.
The Indian section of the sale is estimated to exceed 125,600 pounds.
A spokesperson for Christie’s said several Indian private collectors had shown interest and institutions had enquired about the works, which will be exhibited in London Sep 24.
