China to set up special fund for arts, culture
November 7th, 2011 - 9:39 am ICT by IANSBeijing, Nov 7 (IANS) China is planning to set up a special fund worth 200 million yuan (around $31 million) to finance arts and cultural performances in a bid to develop the country’s “soft power”, an official said.
The fund — likely to be set up in 2012 — will support various forms of arts ranging from opera, philharmonic, ballet and Chinese folk opera, Tao Cheng, vice head of the arts department under the ministry of culture, told Xinhua.
China’s top leadership has recently attached greater importance to improving the country’s cultural power after decades of economic growth.
The ministry of finance has said it would increase expenditure on museums, cinemas, music companies, publishing houses and other cultural institutions.
