Cat poo coffee is a hit in New York
July 28th, 2010 - 10:34 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, July 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Surprisingly New York residents are ready to shell out 30 bucks for a cup of “cat poo coffee”. The drink is made by collecting beans from the poop of civet, a small animal that looks like a cat and it looks like it’s the most expensive coffee in the empire state.
Lots of people are consuming the drink called “Kopi Luwak” in coffee shops like Porto Rico in the west village, but shop owner Peter Longo said he only gets orders weekly.
He had some concerns about the drink and didn’t want to produce it at his shop at first, because of its history of manufacture. The coffee was originally from Indonesia and the Philippines where locals started collecting the droppings of civets after seeing them eat coffee beans.
Coffee experts believe the acids found in the stomach of the cat-like animals give a sweet taste to the coffee. “It tastes earthy, musty. I try to be partial, but when I think where it comes from, I can smell the feces. It’s not worth the price,” according to a coffee drinker Peter.
A pound of the coffee could cost as much as $400 due to the complicated manufacturing process.
