May 10, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): American regional junk food chain, White Castle, has come about with fragranced candles, which exude the smell of one of their well-known burgers.

The candles are shaped like rectangular burger boxes. Each of its parts smells like a different burger of White Castle. The uppermost part of the candle smells like onions and crisp pickle. When the candle burns and reaches its mid part, it will reek of beef patty, ketchup and cheese. The smell of a warm burger bun will be felt towards the base of the candle.

Subsequent to the initial batch of candles that were out of stock immediately, Jamie Richardson, spokesperson for White Castle, had mentioned that the company desires to ensure the availability of candles again prior to the holidays. The White Castle admirers, who missed the initial batch of candles, can sign up and will be given an update as soon as the next batch of candles strikes the marketplace.

The proceeds from the sales of the candles will travel to a charity called Autism Speaks.

Trademarked as ‘Slyders’, White Castle burgers were priced at five cents till 1940s, and stayed at ten cents for years thereafter. For several years, when the original burgers vended for five cents, White Castle every so often ran promotional advertisements in local broadsheets, which consisted of coupons that presented five burgers for ten cents.
