London, Jan 25 (IANS) Britons bought more beer from supermarkets to consume at home than they did at pubs and bars in the run-up to Christmas last year. Some 3.58 million barrels of beer were sold at licenced premises from October to December 2010, but stores sold 3.6 million, according to The Sun.
Overall, Britons sank 333 million fewer pints in their local in 2010.
Analyst Mark Brumby said: “The Facebook generation is spending a lot more time drinking at home. It ain’t looking brilliant for pubs and bars at the minute.”
The British Beer and Pub Association has urged ministers to freeze beer duty that could push the price of a pint up by four pence in April.
Chief Brigid Simmonds said: “It shows how badly pubs have been squeezed out by huge beer tax hikes.”
