Britain gears up for Mother’Day with flowers
April 1st, 2011 - 6:39 pm ICT by IANSLondon, April 1 (IANS) People in Britain are all geared up to present flowers to their mothers. Carpets of flowers are springing up across Britain for Mother’s Day Sunday, Daily Express reports.
Over 200,000 orchids, begonias and chrysanthemums have been planted under eight hectares of glass.
“Although Christmas is our peak time, Mother’s Day sales are condensed into about four days, so it is busier,” said commercial manager Gary Shorland.
“The orchids have been cultivated here for about a year and are two years old by the time they are sold. Other plants take only 10-12 weeks to produce.”
However, an online poll of 2,000 Britons has revealed nearly half of them will send an email or text message instead of a Mother’s Day card with flowers this weekend.
One in 10 also admitted to pretend his or her card had been lost in the post!
