London, January 28 (ANI): Health concerns have been raised after a study found that children in the UK, as young as 11, were consuming almost two bottles of wine a week.

The NHS Information Centre recorded the alcohol consumption by more than 23,000 children in different parts of England.

Researchers found kids, between 11 and 15, in the North-east were the heaviest under-age drinkers with a consumption of around 17.7 units a week, the equivalent of almost two bottles of wine or eight pints of lager, reports the Daily Express.

The North-west and Yorkshire saw 16.3 units on average, the East Midlands 16.1, the West Midlands and South-west 14.2, the South-east 13.5, East England 13, and London 11.3.

Alcohol Concern’s Don Shenker said: “Today’s figures are very worrying. Too many young people are now drinking at or above safe adult levels, yet their bodies are less able to cope with the harm alcohol can cause.” (ANI)
