Austria begins crackdown on extremist teachers

Thursday’sdecisionwasthelatestdevelopmentinadebateaboutpoliticalviewsheldbyAustria’sMuslimteachers,afterastudymadepublicinlateJanuaryfoundthat21.9percentofthemopposeddemocracyonreligiousgrounds.

Sincethen,Austria’sMuslimcommunityandEducationMinisterClaudiaSchmiedagreedonaplantoimprovethequalityofreligiouseducation.

TheplanalsosaidthattheMuslimcommunitymustrevoketeachinglicencestothose”whohaveprovedtodisassociatethemselvesfromdemocraticvaluesorhumanrights”.

However,Schmieddidnotwaitfortheteacher’ssuperiorstoact,butsaidThursdayshehadmadeherdecisioninordertoavert”imminentdanger”tohisschoolandpupils.

“Religiouseducationhasitslimitswheretheconstitution,democracyandtheruleoflawareaffected,”theministersaid.

Some400,000Muslimsliveinthecountry,accountingforalmostfivepercentofthepopulation.ManyofthemhavetheirrootsinTurkeyorformerYugoslavia.
