555 artists perform Odissi to create world record
December 23rd, 2011 - 7:20 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Dec 23 (IANS) A total of 555 artists from 20 countries performed classical Odissi dance on one stage in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar Friday with an aim to create a world record.
Thousands of spectators were left spell-bound when the dancers, clad in traditional costumes, gave their performance at the Kalinga Stadium here at 3.30 p.m. The dance lasted for about 30 minutes.
The colourful programme was organised by the state government in association with the US-based Indian Performing Arts Promotion (IPAP) and Odissi Research Centre (ORC).
?It was for the first time in the world such a large number of dancers performed Odissi on one stage,? an organiser told IANS.
Odissi is one of India’s oldest surviving classical dance forms. The organisers expect the event will find a place in the Guinness World Records.
Last year, around 2,800 dancers created a world record when they performed the century-old Kuchipudi dance form at Gacchibowli Stadium in Hyderabad.
