At least 36 die in fatal bus crash in India
December 27th, 2010 - 2:02 pm ICT by BNO NewsLUCKNOW, INDIA (BNO NEWS) — At least 36 people were killed in India on Sunday when a bus crashed violently into a mini-truck carrying 54 people coming from a funeral in the country’s northern region, officials said.
The accident occurred near the Vitroi village on the Barielly-Etah highway in the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. In addition to the 36 fatalities, eighteen others were also injured.
According to reports, the driver of the truck spotted a large sand dune due to construction work being conducted on the road. In the driver’s attempt to avoid the dune, he suddenly hit the breaks and a bus struck the over-loaded truck from behind.
India is often the scene of deadly road accidents, many of which are attributed to reckless driving, aging vehicle and overloading. In new figures released earlier this year, India overtook China to top the world in road fatalities.
