Rahul Gandhi Chennai, Apr 16(ANI): Youth Congress workers in Chennai burnt the effigy of state Tamil Nadu Congress President K.V. Thangabalu on Saturday while demanding his removal from the post.

The youth workers had gathered after Thangabalu removed 19 members from the party, including R. Thiagarajan, a former legislator from Tamil Nadu, S.V. Sekar, a prominent member of the state Congress committee, and other youth Congress workers.

Thangabalu dismissed them on charges that they were indulging in anti-party activities.

Youth Congress worker K. Hari said that the protest would continue till Thangabalu is removed from his post.

“We have been elected after elections within the party and we had joined congress only for Rahul Gandhi (Congress General Secretary). Only he has the right to remove us from the party and not the state president. After such dismissals, young members are worried and are thinking to quit the party,” said Hari.

The Congress leaders were also seen praising Rahul Gandhi.

The polls to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly are in progress. The first phase took place on April 13.

The Congress is an ally of provincial ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and is contesting for only 63 seats. (ANI)
