- Srinagar, Nov 15 (IANS) A 23-year-old man was critically wounded when a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper’s service rifle went off accidentally in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
A senior police officer said Riyaz Ahmad Ganai was critically wounded after the rifle of a CRPF trooper went off, letting out a sharp burst of automatic fire in village of Trehgam.
“One of the bullets hit Riyaz on the chest. He was immediately taken to the local hospital in Kupwara where the doctors referred him to a hospital in Srinagar,” the officer said.
The CRPF trooper was detained after protests rocked Trehgam where a strike was also observed to protest the incident.
Trehgam, nearly 110 km from here, is the birth place of the pro-Independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi in 1984.
