West Bengal farmers criticize government over water shortage
March 28th, 2011 - 11:28 am ICT by ANINayagram (West Bengal), Mar.28 (ANI): Ahead of the state polls in West Bengal, farmers have criticised the state government over poor water supply in Nayagram.
Amar Kinkar Jana, a farmer, said that since the land was not irrigated properly, it did not yield a good harvest, even though it was fertile.
When asked about their expectations from the new government, the villagers said that they only wanted the water shortage problem to be solved.
Jana said that a few years ago, Santosh Rana, an MLA had inaugurated a river pump scheme, but it failed and the scheme remained incomplete.
Tapas Ghosh, another farmer, said that they were waiting for the elections so that they could elect a new government, which would work towards the development of the area.
West Bengal will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, the second and third phase on April 23 and 27, fourth phase on May 03, fifth phase on May 7 and the sixth phase on May 10.
The CPM-led Left Front coalition has been in power in West Bengal for more than three decades, making it the world’s longest ruling democratically elected government.
Presently, it is facing a tough challenge from the Trinamool Congress and its ally, the l ruling Congress party, who have stepped up pressure by raising simmering issues such as Maoist insurgency, corruption, and unemployment, ahead of the polls. (ANI)
