Chennai, Jan 1 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Saturday said his government would continue to put into action populist schemes as long as poor people existed in the state.

“Those criticising us for announcing freebies are not criticising such schemes but us. But let me tell you that as long as poor people live in the state, we will continue providing freebies,” said Karunanidhi at the inauguration of a free dhoti-saree scheme here.

On the occasion, Karunanidhi also launched a scheme for providing free ingredients used to make Pongal, a local delicacy, on the occasion of the Harvest Day festival (falling in second week of January), named after it.

Further lashing out at the media for criticizing the state government’s populist schemes, he said: “We are doing it for the Tamil people. How can this affect the economy. The free saree-dhoti scheme had not just benefited the people but also the weavers in the state. More than 50,000 handloom and power loom weavers have been benefited from this.” (ANI)
