Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, Apr 22(ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said that it has complete confidence in the Supreme Court in the matter of the 2002 Godhra riots case.

Speaking to mediapersons, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said they are waiting the court’s decision over Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s involvement in the case, despite the affidavit submitted by a senior police officer earlier in the day, which implicated Modi.

“On this matter (Gujarat riots), the Gujarat government’s position is already been given to SIT (Special Investigation Team) which certainly will be forwarded to Supreme Court. We have complete confidence in Supreme Court’s matter and this is sub-judice matter. We shall await for the final word from the Supreme Court,” Sitharaman said.

“The SIT is being monitored by the Supreme Court and at this stage or any stage, it is important that we don’t undermine our institutions. It is important to have faith in the judicial process, and therefore the BJP very clearly says that we have to respect the judicial process. This is a case of an investigation being done by the SIT under the supervision of the Supreme Court. We should have faith, will wait for the verdict,” she added.

Earlier today, a senior police officer Sanjeev Bhatt, who is probing the case, submitted an affidavit in the apex court, which claimed Modi had directed the state police not to take any action against the rioting mobs.

The riots in 2002 took place after the burning of the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002, in which 59 kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh were killed. The riots claimed over 1,000 lives. (ANI)
