New Delhi, Mar 22 (ANI): National Commission for Women chairperson Girija Vyas on Tuesday said the commission is trying its best to make Delhi safer for women.

“We are trying to make Delhi safer by focusing more on those, who work at night as well as day. We are focusing on what kind of training to be given, how to fulfill the responsibilities of civil societies as well as ours,” Vyas said in her address at a seminar here.

“It is not that when someone raises an issue, then everyone comes to the forefront and as soon as they stop speaking, it all dies down. We would try to ensure those issues will not come up again,” she added.

Meanwhile, H. G. S. Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), urged people to report incidents of crime and cooperate with the police.

“Our request would be that students’ union representatives or campus authorities should readily cooperate with us. Whenever an incident happens, they should report it immediately. Many are not reporting thinking that they would end up in trouble later,” said Dhaliwal.

“But we have never seen such instances. This apprehension usually occurs in mind. We can assure that whoever is reporting, we will take care not to have any trouble to that person,” he added.

Apart from students, police officials as well as university authorities were also present at the event.

The recent killing of 21-year-old Delhi University student Radhika Tanwar has ignited the issue of safety of students, especially girls, among the university authorities.

In the backdrop of the murder of Radhika Tanwar, Girija Vyas had on March 11 urged the people to act together and responsibly to combat crime against women in the country.

Radhika was shot while walking across a pedestrian bridge near South Delhi’s Ramlal Anand College on March 8, where she was enrolled. (ANI)
