Vice President Ansari condoles Congress leader Arjun Singh’s demise

New Delhi, Mar 5(ANI): Vice President M. Hamid Ansari on Saturday condoled the passing away of veteran Congress leader and former Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh.

In his condolence message, Ansari said: “I am deeply grieved to learn about the passing away of veteran leader Arjun Singh. He will always be remembered for the distinguished services that he had rendered to the nation in different capacities and the meaningful changes that he brought about in public policy and governance in the various offices that he had held with dignity and distinction.”

“Through his stints as Chief Minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh, as Governor of Punjab and as a Minister in the Union Council of Ministers, Singh has left an indelible impression on Indian polity and society by bringing in progress, prosperity, long lasting peace and inclusiveness.”

“My wife joins me in offering heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and the wide circle of friends and admirers. We pray to the almighty to grant them the strength and fortitude to withstand this loss,” he added.

Singh, who was admitted at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), died of a heart attack yesterday. He was 81.

He is survived by his wife Saroj Devi, two sons- Ajay and Abhimanyu and daughter Veena.

Singh was the Union Human Resource Development Minister from 2004 to 2009, and was the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister when the Bhopal gas tragedy occurred in December 1984.

He also served as the Governor of Punjab once for a short period. As Governor of Punjab, he worked for the Rajiv-Longwal Accord for peace in Punjab. He was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2000. (ANI)
