Vaiko seeks UN intervention in Sri Lankan crisis
April 19th, 2009 - 10:15 pm ICT by ANIChennai, Apr 19 (ANI): Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) founder V. Gopalswamy on Sunday urged the United Nations’ intervention to solve the Sri Lankan crisis.
Gopalswamy, commonly known as Vaiko, said that the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in India should be lifted and the UN should send troops to Sri Lanka to stop the war.
“When the world is ready to pressurise Sri Lanka on war, even then the Indian government is not ready to put pressure on the island nation. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse is doing everything he wants to do. At this juncture, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) should send its troops to stop war in Sri Lanka, just the way it intervened in Kosovo,” Vaiko said while releasing his party’s manifesto here.
Vaiko also praised All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, saying she deserved to be a fit candidate for the Prime Minister’s post.
“Jayalalithaa is a dynamic leader with versatile capabilities. She deserves to be a fit candidate for the Prime Minister’s post. We will cross the bridge when it comes. But when the occasion arises, I will raise my voice in her support,” he added.
When pointed out Jayalalithaa herself had declared that she had no aspirations to become Prime Minister, Vaiko said, “She may not have any aspirations. But we will raise our voice.” (ANI)
