US, India share best practices to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa
September 3rd, 2010 - 9:21 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): India and the United States joined forces to showcase the strengths of India’s HIV/AIDS prevention and control program for a delegation from Ghana, a real-life example of the bilateral partnership on global issues.
A US Embassy release said that a ten-member delegation from Ghana visited India from August 20 through 28 to learn about India’s best practices in HIV/AIDS prevention and control efforts and was particularly impressed with progress made by India in mapping and data collection, micro planning, and training of peer educators and health professionals.
U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer added, “It is always inspiring to see international collaboration on food security and other important global challenges and to get a glimpse of what is possible when India and the United States cooperate to find solutions to these pressing issues.”
Under the auspices of the U.S. government, the Ghanaian team met stakeholders from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the National and State AIDS Control program, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The delegation traveled to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to observe the state-of-the-art HIV/AIDS program supported by the U.S. Government, the Government of India, and other partners.
Dr. Richard Amenyah, Director of Technical Services, Ghana AIDS Council (GAC) said, “It is a great moment in our lives to visit India and learn from the Indian experience.” (ANI)
