New Delhi, Apr 4 (ANI): U.S. Ambassador to India, Timothy J. Roemer, on Monday congratulated the leaders of both India and Pakistan for a very successful dialogue on the sidelines of the World Cup semi-final clash at Mohali last week.
“Cricket diplomacy looked like it had traction, it had very optimistic start, as important ascricket diplomacy is the discussion of substance,” said Roemer.
“US congratulates the leaders of India and Pakistan for a very successful dialogue, now you have three things working at once, talks, cricket diplomacy we have real substance, engagement on issues which are critical, then you have people to people ties, that is something US applauds but recognize that India and Pakistan have to determine the pace of talks,” he added.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani came to Mohali on the invitation of his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh. The two leaders attempted to reengage through cricket diplomacy and both sides have made a forward movement in taking the dialogue process forward.
The US envoy also congratulated the Indian cricket team on winning the 2011 World Cup.
“We would want to congratulate the magnificent decision making of captain Dhoni exercising great judgment, off course also our congratulations goes to glorious career of one and only Sachin who now has world cup, he deserves it,” said Roemer.
“On behalf of Americans, President Obama, I congratulate the kings of cricket, kings of world to bring back the cup here to India after 28 years,” he added.
India scripted a glorious new chapter in their cricketing history on Saturday night by regaining the coveted Cricket World Cup after 28 years. The last World Cup victory for India came against the West Indies in 1983 at Lords in England.
In the nerve-wrecking summit clash of the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets.
With this win, India has become the first nation to win the World Cup on home soil. (ANI)
