Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, Mar 15 (ANI): The Budget Session of Delhi Assembly began on a stormy note on Tuesday with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators demanding the resignation of PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.

Senior BJP leader VK Malhotra made it clear that the Opposition will specifically target Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for shielding Chauhan, who was held guilty by the Lokayukta for interfering in a tax raid on a South Delhi resort.

Malhotra said the party had also decided to seek a special discussion on 21 subjects, which included the price rise, the law and order situation, Commonwealth Gmaes irregularities and scarcity of drinking water. The Lokayukta had recommended to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil last week that Chauhan be removed from his post for interfering in a tax raid on a South Delhi resort last year.

Ruling that Chauhan misused his position to ask tax officials to go easy during the raid, the Lokayukta observed that the Minister cannot stay on in office, given his misconduct.

In his order, Lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin said: “President of India may thus be pleased, in the exercise of statutory discretion, to withdraw her pleasure for the Respondent (Chauhan) to hold office in terms of Clause (5) of Article 239AA of the Constitution of India and Section 12 of the Act, being the Competent Authority under the Act.” (ANI)
