UNICEF’s campaign girl against child labour continues to lead miserable life
August 5th, 2009 - 9:30 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Patna, Aug 5 (ANI): After becoming The United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF)campaign girl against child labour, Chunchun Kumari, 10, had thought her miserable days would end soon. But little did she think her popularity would hardly change her miserable life.
Chunchun continues to lead a life of abject poverty in Bihar’s Patna city.
After Chunchun was selected as the ‘poster girl’ of the campaign, the family had expected financial assistance from UNICEF and the State government, but they are subjected to earn money from a humble roadside dhaba (eatery) that Chunchun’s mother Sita Devi runs.
“UNICEF clicked her (Chunchun Kumari) pictures and pasted them (across the country as part of the UNICEF campaign against child labour). However, they didn’t help us. Our situation is same as it used to be earlier. We are still living on footpath,” said Sita Devi.
Chunchun also feels dejected, as she has to clean utensils and is unable to attend school.
“They (UNICEF) said that they will give us food, clothes and everything necessary. But, they didn’t give us anything. They didn’t help in my education. Now, I wash soiled utensils in the dhaba (eatery),” said Chunchun. (ANI)
