- Kochi, July 18(ANI): The umbrella industry in Kerala is expecting to do a good business this year with the arrival of monsoons.
Kerala’s umbrella industry occupies a major chunk of business in the production of umbrellas and awaits heavy rainfall to hit the coasts, which invariably boost their monsoon sales.
“Last year our umbrella industry was not in a very good shape because of lack of rain. This year I think the start is good. Anyway I am expecting very good rain this year because there was no summer rain this time. I hope that this year I can do better business than last year,” said K.N.Marzook, Managing Director of Colombo Umbrella House.
Meanwhile, according to the Meteorological Department, out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions across the country, 21 has so far received normal to excess rains, while the rest of 15 has witnessed deficient or scanty rainfall, as on first week of July,.
Kerala is famous for colourful and innovative designer umbrellas made by large manufacturers using imported materials and people are seen flocking exclusive showrooms set by branded umbrella makers in Kochi and Alleppey district.
“Kids are really enjoying with the colourful umbrellas. I just bought three umbrellas from the store and they have a good collection over here. So we are all happy and thrilled about this,” said Shibly Vargheese, a customer.
The umbrella industry in the State holds a market share of Rs 1 billion to Rs 1.5 billion and more than Rs 300 million are spent on the marketing of this industry every year. (ANI)
