Manmohan Singh Guwahati, Apr 1 (ANI): The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has called for a 12-hour shutdown in Assam on Saturday to protest the proposed visit of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, where he is scheduled to campaign for the Congress candidates for the first phase of assembly polls on April 4.

The Publicity Secretary of the Paresh Barua-led faction, Arunodoy Dohotiya, in a statement said the shutdown has been called in line with the announcement made earlier that ULFA would call a ‘bandh’ whenever a head of state or central leader visited the state.

“We want to drive home the point that people of Assam will no longer be fooled by false promises made by Congress,” said the statement. All emergency services have been, however, exempted from the purview of the shutdown, which will begin from 6:00 a.m.

Assam will hold two-phase elections in which 62 constituencies will go to polls on April 4 and 11.

In all, 23,813 polling booths have been set up for 18 million voters to exercise their franchise. (ANI)
