Jammu, Jan 13 (IANS) Two suspected guerrillas of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist outfit and two policemen were killed in a fierce gun battle in a border district of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday, the police said.The fighting erupted in the evening in the Kallar forests of the mountainous Rajouri district, about 160 km north of Jammu.
The police said a suspected militant hideout was cordoned following a tip off.
“The police came under fire while they were zeroing in on the location,” a police officer said, adding two policemen died in the gunfight. The police then killed “two militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba”.
The police said about five militants were in the hideout. Though the firing stopped, a search operation was on for the other militants who were believed to have fled.
The shootout comes on the heels of a major gunfight in the Mendhar forest of Poonch district that lasted eight days leaving three security personnel dead.
No militant was killed or arrested in the Poonch battle.
