A police officer said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group of the state police jointly surrounded a house in Moominabad village near Tral town, 45 km from here, on specific information about presence of two militants inside.
“The holed up militants were told to surrender upon which they opened fire leading to a gunfight,” the officer said.
Muzaffar Malla, commander of the Hizbul Mujaheedin outfit, and another guerrilla, identified as Suhail Khan, were killed in the gunbattle while an army officer was injured.
Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from the slain Hizbul guerrillas. The injured army officer was rushed to a hospital.
